project: Romania at World Expo 2005. Identity package of the Romanian pavilion: logo, brochure, press ads,
flyers, stationery, website

Background: Dragos Galgotiu, a well known Romanian theatre director, the art director of the Romanian pavilion,
asked me to be part of the team, as we had a successful collaboration on previous projects. My task was to create the
visual identity, with all it implies, from logo to brochures, folders, stationery and web site.

Challenge: I had to create an identity visual concept and to design a logo representing Romania and also illustrating the
Expo’s theme: “Nature’s Wisdom”.

Solution: Considering the Expo’s theme – “Nature’s Wisdom”, I’ve created a lively flower-tree. His arms/branches evoke
a friendly greeting. I used warm colors and earth like colors: orange, light green and brown. The trunk was drawn by a
brush touch line, so that it looked like the Japanese ideographs to a certain extent.

Romania’s participation at the World Exposition was coordinated by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The brochure illustrates and brings the watcher into the play’s decadent, dandy-ist, baroque atmosphere. It was very much appreciated by the audience and critics.

These brand names (Easy Fly, TaxiFly, CabFly, Gofly, LightFlight, GoFly) suggest that this budget airline company offers the traveller a lot of facilities
(comparing to other budget airlines) with no effort, no wasted time and no extra-money. The visual identity – logo – reflects in shapes and colours the idea
and the feeling that flying with EasyFly (or other name here-proposed) to any destination is affordable, comfortable and easy to manage.

The Josephine Baker ad series is just an example of the manner in which the concept of ‘sparing the savings’ can be developed. For this kind of series, we can use any personality – well-known actors/actresses, movie characters, sport celebrities etc. – whose evolution from richness to poverty was influenced or caused by irrational money waste, in order to sustain our statement “Don’t waste your money. You never know when you need it most.” This is our way of communicating that all people, even the rich ones, should be more careful when it comes to spending their money. Concluding, everyone should choose to pay less money for the same services; why not flying with budget airlines and having almost all services included, instead of paying more for flying with full-cost airlines?

The Jack Stafford Collection’s mission is to bring back smart dressing into social situations. The fashion designer is taking the suit out of the office
and reclaiming it for fashion. Jack Stafford chose me for designing his logo after we had contacted him, as a reaction to his ad posted on
Amsterdam Weekly.

Jack Stafford wanted an art deco looking like logo to match the line and the accents
of his fashion creations. JSC logo has an interesting art deco look, due to the art deco pattern I’ve used and the bright red which adds value to
the JSC’s simple and dark colored suits.

The RCI (Romanian Cultural Institute) asked me to design a catalogue presenting the TPS Programme,
that will be sent to publishers all over Europe. TPS supports the publication abroad of Romanian high-quality works
that are of interest to a wide readership, in the fields of literature and humanities.

The Translation and Publication Support Programme (TPS) aims to enhance the access of the foreign audience to
Romanian literature and to support the presence of Romanian authors on the international book markets.

The panoramic map of the historical center of Bucharest (the Lipscani Area) is a virtual reconstruction, based on over 7000 photos taken in March 2004. The map is designed to facilitate the discovery of the historic charm of Lipscani.

The project was coordinated by arch. Aurelian Triscu, specialist in the history of architecture and member of the Pro Patrimonio Foundation board. It was financed by the USA Embassy in Bucharest, and published in Romanian, English and French versions. On 1 st July 2004, the American Embassy in Bucharest organized at the Stavropoleos monastery a ceremony, in order to celebrate the finalization of the monastery restoration works and to launch the Bucharest Panoramic Map (both projects had been financed by the US Embassy). HE Mr. Michael Guest and US Embassy representatives, Father Marchis (Stavropoleos), Mrs. Maria Berza and four PP representatives (including two of the PP volunteers), me and the photographer Gabi Balanescu attended the event.
